Information about our Advanced Kayaking Class

Level 2 Advanced Kayak Class based on the curriculum from the American Canoe Association

Overview

Have you taken a Level 1 kayak class and now are ready for more advanced paddling techniques? Or maybe you have been paddling for years and want to learn more advanced strokes to help you navigate the river more effectively?

Join us for our Advanced Kayaking class – Level 2. This class is intended for those that have already completed a Level 1 class (however it is not a requirement) and want to take their paddling skills to the next level. In order to participate in the Level 2 class without completing the Level 1 class you must be proficient in the following kayak strokes and skills: forward stroke, reverse stroke, forward and reverse sweep and as well as basic self-rescue techniques (entering your kayak from deep water).

The focus of the Level 2 kayaking class is on paddling skills, but the class will begin with a land-based session to cover key topics. The on-water portion of the class will include a review of basic paddling strokes, then the group will learn about Eddy turns, ferrying and sculling strokes.  The group will also discuss river hazards and how to navigate those hazards. All our classes use a challenge by choice philosophy so if you are not comfortable getting in the water or practicing a particular skill just let your instructor know.

If you want to challenge yourself further, we also offer the Paddlesports Safety Facilitator Class. This class is great if you are paddling with a church group, school program or just your friends. The Paddlesports Safety Facilitator (PSF) Class covers basic rescue skills and more advanced group management skills. Learn more about all our paddling classes and other outdoor skills program.

What to Expect:

All classes include use of a kayak.  We prefer to use our class boats because they are easier to teach certain paddling skills from. Feel free to give us a call if you want to bring a boat of your own so we can discuss that option. Classes begin with a land-based session to discuss key topics. The class will then move to the on-water session where the group will work on the paddling skills. The Level 2 class spends more time on the water than the basic class. All our classes use a challenge by choice philosophy so if you are not comfortable getting in the water or practicing a particular skill just let your instructor know.
