Q: What kind of canoes do you have?
A: Higher Pursuits uses the Mad River Explorer 14TT.
Q: Do you rent kayaks?
A: Yes, we have several types of kayaks for rent or for our guided
programs. We use Perception Swifty Kayaks and Jackson Kayaks
Q: How many people do you allow in a canoe?
A: We recommend that only two adults paddle in canoe. However,
two adults can paddle with up to two small children per canoe.
Q: What if I have my own boat?
A: If you have your own boat we can drop you off or pick you up for
a $10 shuttle fee.
Q: Do you allow alcohol?
A: No
Q: Do you provide life jackets for children?
A: Yes. We have life jackets suitable for children. It
is Tennessee State Law that all children under 13 must wear a life
jacket at all times.
Q: Do I have to wear my life jacket?
A: Higher Pursuits recommends that all paddlers wear their life
jacket at all times on the river. On guided trips you are
required to wear your life jacket.
Tips
- Always wear your life jacket!
- Leave your valuables at home so you don't lose them in the
river. (such as rings, wallets, cell phones, necklaces,
expensive eyeglasses)
- Use a strap to secure eyeglasses or sunglasses.
- Wear shoes that can get wet.
- Don't tie canoes together or grab other canoes.
- Do not throw trash in the river or on the river bank.
Bring a trash bag so you can pack up your trash.
- Respect private property
What should I bring?
- Water, Gatorade or other beverage to keep you hydrated.
- Shoes that can get wet. We recommend tennis shoes or water
shoes. Flip-flops generally do not stay on your feet and end up
floating away down the river.
- Dry clothes and towel to leave in car for after your trip.

- Comfortable clothing that can get wet and dry quickly.
